Alexander Baege, often referred to as A. Baege, was born on July 24,
1927 in Merseburg Germany. He began his work after WWII and ran a
successful studio in Wiesbaden. His work consisted of photojournalism,
portraiture and commercial. Sometime during the 1950s, he became part of
the Naturist Movement (see the
Gerhard Riebicke
page for more information). He photographed extensively at Montalivet, a
famous French nudist resort made famous by Jock Sturges who used it as a
backdrop many years later. Alexander's work was published in European
1960s nudist publications such as "Gymnos", "Helios" and "The Naturist".
He published a few books on photography. He enjoyed traveling to
the U.S. and moved there in the 1970s. According to BFI, an internet
film database, in 1958 Alexander Baege made a travelogue on America
which included a bathing scene.
Alexander tried getting work in Hollywood and reportedly was not
successful and never worked professionally again. Alexander Baege's body
of work remains at cult level status which may eventually change. He
died on May 12, 1999 in Los Angeles where he spent the last 20 years of
his life.
Irma (Irmgard) Ley is the name of the model used in first eight scans.
She was Alexander Baege's girlfriend for many years and traveled
extensively with him on many of his photographic excursions. They
spit-up sometime during the 1970s. Irma's "Sphinx in the Sand"
photographs are particularly charming.
044 is from a source that is believed not to be from Alexander Baege.
The model is also featured in images 035-043. She probably was
professional figure model that was hired by Alexander Baege.
